“The Mystery of the Soul, Osaira Muyale established a deep Affiliation with introspection and the deconstruction of memory. The iconography, indebted to Louis bourgeois’ has a great influence on more than a few artists and takes shape in a methodical retreat into an inner universe. Her interests go from dysfunctional communication to the crisis of the modernist model of progress, the collapse of utopias, and the widely proclaimed death of the subject. The key point of her work is the complex construction of identity, the retrenchment and safeguarding of the personal, that which Okwul Enwezor understands as dislocation, uprooted-ness, displacement and dispersion, exile, and alienation gaining terrain even in the rooms of one’s own house. Over time, Muyale outlines the resources to
be deployed much more clearly. Hallway between Wifredo Lam’s human-animal-mythological syncretism and the ‘Blue Klein” Victoire de Samothrace,” I’m Not White ,Not Black, But Blue”. From 2012, a hybrid image in blue levitating over a trampoline, is a good example of the extension of all these concerns with an extraordinary power of synthesis”
Renwick Heromino – Art curator
1995
“Osaira Muyale is a dreamer and a visionary that ponders the
infinite realms of her being and searches for beauty through the
chaos of existence. With her magic touch and love she is able
to transform the everyday into the sublime”
Özkan Gölpinar – Publicist
2018
“Osaira Muyale works within the contested territory of representation: how we represent ourselves and the mechanisms that determine how we interpret the representation of others. Sculptures and paintings, – made by herself, objet trouve’, or a combination of both – are her mediums; research, classification, interaction her strategies. Her skillful, moving and intensely tactile installations, explore history and time and our place within them. Her biography resembles that of immigrant children or the children of Diaspora (Muyale herself combines bloodlines ranging from Lebanon, to the Netherlands to Aruba in the Caribbean). She is able through various means to deconstruct and complement memory processes and story-lines, whether or not with the help of found objects that both bring her history to life and seem to question it. Muyale investigates the body, humans as well as animals as a conduit for different artistic and theoretical strategies, revealing the body’s fundamental role in comprehending our sense of self. Working across diverse mediums, she approaches the body as raw material. She adapts it at will in order to explore identity, gender issues and the body’s role within the social matrix. The body is reduced to something more meaningful and permanent than a modifiable facade, which can be constantly changed and morphed to resist or compliment outside forces. In Paradise park, historical and future narratives are collapsed into staged sculptures where the bodies of humans merge with animals and plants. She alters them to exist in a Liminal Space. By doing so she encapsulate her characters in a form of “inbetweenness” as a space where identity is fluidly determined with other bodies and the environment as ‘Negotiating Bounds’. Transforming dead materials, into beautiful mythological gods and goddesses. Like a visual anthropologist of the contemporary Caribbean Osaira merges both the European heritage and the high culture which , present and past, emotion and reason. Continuing her investigation on the Horse bay …….Muyale offers new sculptural forms that blend female, male, horses and humans into indistinguishable creatures that navigates public and private domains. The inhabitants of her dreamland are also blue horses, but Osaira cherishes them, she paints them in blue in an attempt not only to restore their honor but also to offer them a role as a vehicle of breakthrough. Putting emphasis on the spirituality of the colors that surround the Island and in the idea of divine spirituality battling hedonistic materialism. Representing hybrid species, a hybrid moment, exploring and capturing fleeting occurrences where these horses willfully deviate from the norm humans have kept them captive and seeks out modes of interaction while opening up a generative space of play, exploration, and resistance to societal mandates. Her work exploits and defies aesthetic hedonism, blending material with music, sense with smell, hypnotizing audiences into a chaotic trance, that calls for surrender, or simply the right state of alertness between being and non-being. Özkan Gölpinar is a publicist and a member of the Dutch Council for Culture. The Council for Culture is the legal advisory body of the Dutch government in the field of art, culture and media. Gölpinar was associated with the Contemporary Art Beyond Boundaries research program of the Leiden University Center for the Arts in Society (LUCAS). He was also a program maker at the Mondriaan Fund and the Fonds voor Beeldende Kunsten, Vormgeving en Bouwkunst (BKVB). He has twenty years of experience as a journalist for, among others, de Volkskrant and Trouw. Gölpinar has several books, essays, plays and documentaries to his name. He was a member of the advisory committee of the Dutch Foundation for Literature, the Netherlands Film Fund, the Rotterdam Council for Art and Culture and the Fund for Amateur Art and Performing Arts.

An ear is an emotionally charged symbol. Because we receive the Word through the ear. It often represents Faith. In Christian semantics, the ear will often be the symbol by which the Holy Ghost, the dove, makes the announcement to the Holy Virgin. In this case, the ear is the part of the body that makes Maria aware of her unspeakable happiness. Furthermore, it also symbolizes the woman as well as daughters. Consequently, with this the ear gets an erotic connotation as well. A magnificent sound has an immediate effect on each part of the body as a sensory experience and yet the ear in Osaira Muyale’s oeuvre only remains are requisite of the imaginative power. It has a metaphorical meaning, which not only gives cause for observation, but also for deeper associations. Here too, it is clear that is no such a thing as the key to knowing the underlying meaning. The function of intuition is more important. An ear and listening is a mayor theme in contemporary art. Contrary to the works of, say, jan Fabre at Documenta IX and Douglas Gordon at the exposition Entre- Deux in Brussels, Osaira does not attempt to hear the unknown or the “outside”, but the tales of the public. She attempts to let the inner voice speak; to make the suppressed feelings revive. It is not surprising that listening has become a theme in a time in which the hectic life makes that nobody actually has the time to listen anymore. There are more and more souls crying and wandering in the wilderness of new media, fast television footage and 1.000 megabeats per second. Osaira Muyale listens indirectly to the people of Cuba. A work of art has to make the 1.000 voices of silent grief sound. And so, within the theme of the biennale “The individual and his memory”, Muyale Performs an act in which she considers the public as an individual, and wants to let the memory of a past speak. But speaking takes the form of listening, listening to the inner voice. A descent in your own deepest inner self, from where the voice of the unconscious will speak. Therefore, the ear is also comparable with the eye. Both are the carriers of the experience to the memory. For Osaira Muyale personal experience and memory is the most important theme in her works. The experience she tries to concretize and communicate to the spectator, by means of images that thrust themselves upon her in fragments. Experience of life she tries to translate into sculptures. Art that is not about art, or creating art, art not created to please, it rather repels, but art about the experience of the artist, art about life itself. They are translated into sculptures and presented as such. Here too, the fact that the dove and the ear were brought together in early symbolism, can be considered special; the dove brings the message, but also peace. A sign that gives the ear a positive meaning. A meaning also needed to survive, with all the experiences, positive or negative, a human being goes through in his life.
